Two-channel looping video

I stood on the shores of both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans within the span of five days in the spring of 2019. In Refocus, Return, I attempt to make an unfocused video of the expansive ocean. At odds with my camera phone’s autofocus, I repeatedly insert my finger into the frame to blur the background. Similar to the act of returning to my breath after my thoughts wander during meditation, the camera’s focus perpetually alternates between the two subjects, ending when the camera fails to adjust to the horizon. I contemplate the limitations of the automated camera and the perplexity of focus within an expansive field.
